!Gawaxab new SSC chairperson

WINDHOEK, 17 JUN (NAMPA) – Well-known business executive, Johannes !Gawaxab has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Social Security Commission (SSC) of Namibia for a period of three years.
He replaces Bishop Zephania Kameeta, who was recently appointed as Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
A media statement issued by SSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenandei Tjivikua on Wednesday noted that !Gawaxab brings forth a wealth of experience in insurance and financial services, and has worked not only in Namibia but also in Europe and other countries on the African continent.
The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Erkki Nghimtina announced !Gawaxab’s appointment on Wednesday.
!Gawaxab will serve for a period of three years in terms of Section 4 (1)(a) of the Social Security Act, 1994 (Act No. 34 of 1994).
He was quoted in the statement as saying Namibia needs to provide a dynamic social security service, ensure governance is above board and transparent, and ensure that the mandate of the SSC takes into consideration the new vision and direction articulated by President Hage Geingob.
The core business of the SSC is to provide a foundation of social protection for workers and their dependants in respect of earnings replacement due to contingencies arising from maternity leave, sick leave and death and work related disabilities, injuries and loss of employment.
