WINDHOEK, 15 JUN (NAMPA) The Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) on Saturday selected junior netball players to represent the country at the All Ages netball tournament in South Africa later this month.
All Ages is a South African Schools Netball (SASN) tournament which focuses on an integrated netball programme and the growth of netball in regions where it is not played fully.
The trials to select the best under 12; 13; 15; 17 and 19 players were hosted at two venues in the capital.
The U12 and U13 trials took place at the Patrick Iyambo Police College, while the U15, U17 and U19 trials were held at the Windhoek High School.
Seven representatives per age group from each of Namibias 14 regions participated in the trials.
Ten players were then selected for each age group but only the U13, U15 and U19 players will this year represent the country at the netball tournament in South Africa.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, NSSU National Coordinator, Solly Duiker said he was happy with the players selected.
Every year we send a group of U13, 15 and 19 to this youth netball tournament. This is a good exercise for young players as it keeps them active, while on the other side prepares them for the senior national team, he said.
Duiker added that the selected players are from the Khomas, Erongo, Hardap, Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto, Omaheke and Oshana regions, but he is hopeful that all regions will be represented in future teams.
At the moment we don't have active youth netball leagues in the two Kavango regions, but we are always encouraging them to come to such trials as it will help expose those young players to how things are done at national level, he said.
All selected players will have to report for a training camp on Sunday and travel to South Africa on 27 June.
This years All Ages netball tournament will be played in the city of Boksburg on the East Rand of Gauteng province from 29 June to 02 July 2015.
In the 2014 tournament, Namibia's U13, 15 and 19 teams were eliminated in the group and semi-final stages of the competition, respectively.
