SWAKOPMUND, 06 JUN (NAMPA) – Swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe on Friday vacated his mayoral chair and joined the Erongo Regional Council as councillor for the Swakopmund Constituency.
He was sworn in Friday after winning the by-election nine days ago.
Sources close to the office of the mayor confirmed that for now, Swakopmund does not have a mayor or acting mayor.
“We are waiting to see if someone will be elected as our new mayor from Monday,” said a source.
Kambueshe will now represent his region in the National Council, a position previously occupied by late Swapo councillor Germina Shitaleni.
“He will take over the bigger assignment of representing and working for everyone in the region,” Erongo council chairperson Hafeni Ndemula confirmed to Nampa on Saturday.
Kambueshe told this news agency last week the Swakopmund council and the Swapo-Party leadership here will find a mayor as soon as he leaves the office.
“In fact there is already someone in line to replace me, but the councillors have to sit and make the final decision based on election procedures,” said Kambueshe.
It is suspected that the Swapo-Party might choose former Swakopmund mayor Rosina //Hoebes to head the coastal town again.
