Mushimba Nokondonga snake totem wins Oshakati Totem Expo

OSHAKATI, 05 JUN (NAMPA) – Mushimba Nokondonga, a cultural group from the Oshikoto Region, is the champion of the 2015 Oshakati Totem Expo.
The group scored 61.9 per cent in the totem floats competition, which started it activities at the town on 29 May and ends on 06 June 2015.
The Oshakati Town Council is hosting the totem expo for the fourth consecutive year since its inception in 2012.
It has attracted 15 totem groups from nine regions of Oshana (host), Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Erongo, Omaheke, Zambezi, Kavango East and Kavango West.
Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday, the town’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Werner Iita pointed out that only four regions took part in the expo during its first two years and it was attended by six regions last year.
“Nine regions are represented here this year. This indicates that the expo is growing and I wish to see all 14 Namibian regions represented next year,” Iita told his audience.
As the champions, members of Mushimba Nokondonga scooped the first prize of a floating trophy and N.dollars 5 000.
Besides the N.dollars 5 000 prize money, the group became N.dollars 8 000 richer in total. They also received N.dollars 3 000 for participating; an amount given to each totem group for their participation.
Mushimba Nokondonga participated under the Aakwaanyoka (snake) totem.
Ondodjo Cultural Group from Oshana Region are the runners-up, followed by the Zambezi Cultural Group from the Zambezi Region in third position.
These two groups participated under the “Aakwambashu (locust)” and “Onyati (buffalo)” totems, respectively.
Ondjodjo and Zambezi retained the positions they obtained in the same competition last year.
The Oshakati Totem Expo 2015 winds up its activities on Saturday.
