Kavango East SPWC election hangs in the balance

RUNDU, 04 JUN (NAMPA) - The Swapo Party Women’s Council (SPWC) leadership in the Kavango East Region remains indecisive about the date for the election of the new SPWC coordinator for the region.
The election was necessitated by the resignation of Annakleta Shikerete who relinquished her position in March this year to take up a seat in the National Assembly.
Shikerete is currently serving as a Swapo-Party backbencher.
The SPWC leadership in Kavango East has been without a coordinator for about three months and the region’s SPWC mobiliser Elina Mpasi has been acting in the position since Shikerete’s resignation.
The elective extra-ordinary conference was set to be held on 16 May, but was postponed two days prior to the conference after a request by SPWC secretary Petrina Haingura as she had other commitments to attend to.
Haingura on Wednesday denied that the SPWC national leadership is delaying the elective extra-ordinary conference, stressing that they do not dictate regional matters.
She said they are waiting on the SPWC regional leadership to set a date and notify them of the date.
Haingura stated that other regions which have not held extra-ordinary conferences to elect new coordinators include the Erongo and Zambezi regions, adding that the national leadership is also waiting for directives from them on the dates of their elective extra-ordinary conferences.
Meanwhile, Mpasi indicated that they have been waiting for the SPWC secretary to set the date as it was the national leadership who instructed them to postpone the conference.
“The SPWC Secretary wrote a letter asking us to put it on hold until further notice and they promised to come back to us with a possible date,” she said.
Haingura however indicated that she only instructed them to put the conference on hold as she and her deputy, Eunice Ipinge had other engagements and indicated that the regional leadership was expected to come up with another date for the conference.
With both parties pointing fingers at each other, it remains to be seen whether a date will be set soon.
The two candidates vying for the positions of SPWC coordinator in Kavango East are Johanna Nehodi, a SPWC district coordinator for Rundu Urban and Ernestine Ndumba, the SPWC regional treasurer.
Some Swapo-Party members in the Women’s Council have recently called for the extra-ordinary conference to take place as soon as possible as the lack of a coordinator is hampering activities and programmes in the region.
