ONYAANYA, 26 MAY (NAMPA) – Swapo-Party coordinator for the Oshikoto Region’s Onyaanya District, Petrus Kambala was on Monday elected as the ruling party’s candidate for the Onyaanya Constituency by-election.
The by-election follows the appointment of the constituency’s former councillor Henock Kankoshi as the new governor of the Oshikoto Region.
President Dr Hage Geingob recently appointed Kankoshi as Oshikoto regional governor after appointing former Oshikoto regional governor, Penda yaNdakolo as Defence Minister in March this year.
Kambala defeated his three challengers with 43 votes from 88 delegates of 16 branches of the Onyaanya District who participated in the election.
Gideon Shikomba garnered 23 votes and Sackaria Alugodhi 20. Natalia Shikongo, who was the only woman in the race, received her own vote only despite the fact that many women dominated the conference.
One of the 88 vote ballots was spoiled.
In his acceptance speech, Kambala thanked the community of Onyaanya for supporting Kankoshi during his 11-year term of office as the councillor of the constituency.
“Please support me in the same way you supported comrade Kankoshi once I am elected the councillor of this constituency,” Kambala asked the Onyaanya community, adding that he has been part of the constituency leadership for years.
He said he started as a Swapo leader from section level and later moved on to the branch and district levels. “I am also a member of the Constituency Development Committee, and served as a Swapo-Party youth leader in this district,” he said.
Mobiliser of the Swapo-Party in the Oshikoto Region, David Quito Mulunga, who presided over the election, said it was conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
However, Mulunga expressed disappointment that not even a single woman voted for Shikongo despite the party’s philosophy of 50/50 gender representation.
“All of us here are winners by following the party’s elections’ procedures and democracy accordingly, but unfortunately we need only one person today. More chances are coming tomorrow,” said Kankoshi in his closing remarks.
The Onyaanya Constituency by-election is provisionally slated for 09 July 2015.
Swapo is the only political party that has registered its participation thus far.
