ONGWEDIVA, 12 MAY (NAMPA) – A retired soldier who is accused of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public at the Ohangwena Region’s Ongenga Constituency last Friday, has been arrested.
Sergeant Kaume Iitumba of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Public Relations Unit in that region confirmed the arrest to Nampa on Tuesday.
Iitumba said the 61-year-old former member of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) was arrested at the Onepandaulo village in the Oikokola area of the Omusati Region’s Etayi Constituency near the Namibia-Angola border.
He is currently in the NamPol holding cells at Omungwelume, waiting to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Iitumba said the suspect was on Tuesday found in possession of the shotgun that he used to arbitrarily shoot at people who were at a cuca shop of the Omafa Akalipi village at about 19h50 on 08 May 2015 after an argument between him and other people at the said cuca shop.
Police reported that two people were injured in the process.
“He went home to collect his shotgun after the argument, came back with it and started firing at the cuca shop, injuring a 38-year-old man and 27-year-old woman,” Iitumba explained.
The man was shot in the left leg and right shoulder, while the woman was shot in the right foot and left leg.
The two victims were rushed to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital. They were treated and discharged.
Police have it that the suspect fled from the crime scene to neighbouring Angola where he was in hiding since Friday evening.
