Man arrested with AK-47 rifle at Oshakati

WINDHOEK, 10 MAY(NAMPA) - A 52-year-old man was arrested by members of the Namibian Police at Oshakati in the Oshana Region over the weekend after he was found in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle.
The man was arrested at Onendongo village on Friday at around 20h00 when the police found him in illegal possession of the rifle, one magazine containing 30 live rounds, and a pair of binoculars at his residence in the village on the southern outskirts of Oshakati.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday the suspect was further found with a shotgun, but has a valid firearm licence for it.
According to the suspect himself, he was allegedly given the AK-47 rifle as a gift, but he could not elaborate further as to whom he got the firearm and ammunition from.
His identity cannot be made public as he is yet to appear before court.
The suspect is scheduled to make his first appearance in the Oshakati Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.
He will face a charge of contravention of the Ammunition Act of 1966 for being found in illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
