WINDHOEK, 05 MAY (NAMPA) ? The Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Haufiku says he will return to the district hospital at Khorixas in the Kunene Region next week to operate on patients there. Dr Haufiku visited the hospital on 24 April and will visit again on 11 May 2015. He told the National Assembly (NA) during discussions of his ministry's budget on Friday that the district hospital is one of the cleanest in the country, and he was impressed with how well the hospital is maintained. ?For a hospital that was built right after Independence, one thing that stood out is how well-organised and well-managed it is,? he said. The health minister said the hospital has almost all necessary facilities, adding that he visited their theatre and found that their X-ray department is fully functional. The only complaint was that the supply of toner for the developing of X-rays is sometimes an issue. Haufiku said he was so impressed that he told the hospital?s management that he would return to work there next Monday. The minister told parliamentarians he would do this to encourage staff members and for the hospital to serve as an example to hospitals in other parts of the country. He noted that the district hospital sometimes faces challenges around surgical procedures such as caesarean sections, vasectomies and circumcisions. ?I told them I will come, so if they have cases they must just put them aside. That hospital is a wonderful example of how we can maintain facilities,? Haufiku stressed. He then made it clear that he will not compromise on ethics and standards in the ministry, even if it means he must jump in to operate on patients himself. Haufiku, who had a private practice as a General Practitioner (GP) until his appointment to public office, said he will not only manage the ministry, but will also use his skills to ensure quality healthcare for all Namibians. The Ministry of Health and Social Services was earlier this year allocated one of the largest shares of the 2015/16 National Budget - N.dollars 6,49 billion. (NAMPA) SL/AS/LI
