Man allegedly commits suicide over girlfriend

WINDHOEK, 21 JUL (NAMPA) - A 37-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself in the capital on Saturday morning after allegedly being dumped by his girlfriend.
Speaking at a media briefing here on Sunday, Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi said Olivier Swarts took his life at about 05h00 at a house in Joseph Wambo Street in Katutura Central.
Kanguatjivi said it is alleged that Swarts informed relatives that he was going to commit suicide because he was dumped by his girlfriend.
Another suicide case was reported on Sunday morning, when the 27-year-old Janine Louise Diergaardt committed suicide by hanging herself with an electronic cord in the garage she was renting in the Khomasdal residential area.
The incident took place at around 02h30 at a house in Garnet Street, and her body was discovered by a friend who alerted the police.
No suicide note was left behind and police investigations into the matter continue.
In an unrelated incident, a Chinese national residing in Promenaden Weg in the Eros residential area was robbed of items valued at N.dollars 55 800 on Saturday morning at around 03h00.
The items include a flat screen television, two laptops and two cell phones. No arrest has been made in connection with the matter yet and police investigations continue.
In the Ohangwena Region, a 13-year-old girl was raped while on her way home on Friday. The suspect allegedly pushed her to the ground and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The incident took place at Onekuta village, and the suspect is known but has not yet been arrested.
In the Otjozondjupa Region, a 30-year-old member of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) died on the spot when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving on the Okahandja-Karibib main road on Saturday. The vehicle left the road and overturned.
The incident took place at around 05h00.
Constable Prinsloo Mumbela, who was employed at the police station at Dordabis some 90 kilometres outside Windhoek, was alone in the vehicle when the accident occurred.
