WINDHOEK, 19 APR (NAMPA) Rehoboth-based Flamingoes Football Club (FC) have qualified for the 2015/16 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season.
The Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) club was crowned league winners after defeating Bee Bob Brothers FC from Mariental with one goal to nil in Mariental on Saturday.
The winners of each of the three First Division streams, being North East, North West and Southern, are automatically promoted to the NPL.
A media statement issued on Sunday by Flamingoes management stated that their passage to the NPL was made possible by former Tigers player, Kenny Malgass well-taken goal in the 70th minute.
Flamingoes FC were established in 1986 by brothers Tossy and Alex Strauss, and have become the third family-owned football team to campaign in the Premier League after Rebels FC from Khomasdal and Julinho Sporting from Rundu.
Since its establishment, the team competed in the local Rehoboth grassroots league until 2012 when it gained promotion to the 2013 Hardap Regional League.
Sensing immediacy to success, we won that league on our maiden appearance before being promoted to the Southern Stream First Division last year, and again proved all foes wrong when in our maiden appearance in the Southern Stream First Division we clinched the league title with 45 points on the summit, read the statement.
Quoted in the statement, team coach Alex Strauss said: It was not easy but it took serious planning and commitment to be able to succeed in the short time since starting to play organised football. We are looking forward to playing in the NPL.
Meanwhile, Rundu Chiefs from the North East First Division (NEFD) have also been promoted to the elite league.
The North West stream winner has not yet been determined.
The First Division streams will end in April 2015.
