OTJIWARONGO, 17 APR (NAMPA) – The coronation of OvaHerero Paramount Chief, Advocate Vekuii Rukoro is set for 01 May 2015 at Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The 61-year-old Rukoro succeeded the late OvaHerero Paramount Chief, Kuaima Riruako who died in Windhoek on 02 June 2014 after a short illness.
Riruako was 79.
Rukoro was elected by the traditional councillors under the OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA) as the rightful successor of Chief Riruako in September 2014.
The OTA’s organising committee chairperson in Otjiwarongo, Benestus Kandjii said several towns have been tasked to raise funds and donations for the coronation ceremony.
Kandjii said the Otjiwarongo branch on Thursday evening handed over a cheque of N.dollars 16 000 to the OTA treasurer, Bobby Kotjipati.
He said two heads of cattle were also donated towards the coronation event by some community members at the Otjiwarongo Red Flag Commando No.3.
Kandjii said that his committee will continue raising funds for the event.
The delegation from Windhoek that witnessed the handing over of the cheque from the Otjiwarongo branch on Thursday was led by the National Chairperson of the Genocide Committee, Utjiua Muinjangwe.
Muinjangwe is also a member of the organising committee of the coronation event.
She said arrangements for the chief’s coronation are successfully nearing completion and many Namibians in the Khomas, Omaheke, Otjozondjupa and Kunene regions are now waiting for the main event to arrive.
“Everything is almost done. Contributions are coming on a daily basis with the Chief being updated on the progress. We are happy with the progress,” she said.
In addition to the donations from Otjiwarongo, committees at Gam, Otjinene, Aminius and Otjombinde have also donated an unspecified amount of livestock and cash towards the event.
Muinjangwe said some OvaHerero people based in Botswana and South Africa will also attend the event.
