SWAKOPMUND, 17 APR (NAMPA) – Four political parties on Thursday submitted the names of their candidates to contest the Swakopmund Constituency by-election.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia’s (ECN) election coordinator for the Erongo Region, Johannes Kashindinge Nghipuilepo received the names at Swakopmund.
The contesting parties are Swapo, DTA of Namibia, United Democratic Front (UDF) and the National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO).
The candidates are Swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe for Swapo, NUDO’s acting Erongo coordinator Uahimisa Kaapehi, Christa Magrietha Hochobes for the DTA, and the UDF’s secretary for the Swakopmund branch Marius !Uwu-Gaeb.
The by-election is expected to take place on 29 May at 20 venues in Swakopmund.
It will be held to fill the position left vacant by Swapo councillor for that constituency and National Council member, Germina Shitaleni, who passed away early last month.
“We are hopeful that our candidate will win as she is the only young and only female person in this contest. We chose her because she was very active during last year’s Presidential and National Assembly elections,” DTA secretary-general Vincent Kanyetu told Nampa on Thursday.
Kanyetu said before the end of this year, the DTA will establish structures in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.
“At the moment we do not have structures in these towns, but we will soon have full structures - from sections to regional coordinator,” he said.
The supplementary registration of voters that ended last month in Swakopmund registered 232 voters, bringing the number to about 29 000 registered voters in the Swakopmund Constituency.
