SWAKOPMUND, 15 APR (NAMPA) – The Swapo-Party District Committee for Swakopmund has elected Swakopmund Mayor, Juuso Kambueshe as the candidate for the Swakopmund by-election.
Swapo-Party coordinator for the Erongo Region, Philipus Heita announced the results of the extra-ordinary district conference in a media statement on Wednesday.
Heita said the conference took place on Tuesday and four members contested the position: Kambueshe, Mirjam Valombola, Rosina Hoabes and Johannes Ngolombe.
“There were 51 delegates who cast their votes. In the first round, Hoabes received 11 votes while Ngolombe got eight votes,” said the regional coordinator.
A tough contest between Kambueshe and Valombola however resulted in a first round draw with 16 points each.
Kambueshe managed to defeat Valombola with 26 points in the second round when Valombola missed one point and ended up with 25.
This means that if voted for in the by-election, Kambueshe could be the councillor for the Swakopmund Constituency and the party’s regional representative in the National Council.
As such, his duties as town mayor will be ceased and a new mayor would be elected.
The position was left vacant by former Swakopmund Constituency councillor, Germina Shitaleni after her passing on last month.
Heita added that on the same day of the election, the party also held an ordinary district conference where they elected Esmerelda Basson as District Coordinator.
At the same conference, Penehafo Jason Shileka was elected District Treasurer.
“We will submit the candidate name to the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) this week,” Heita said.
The by-election is expected on 29 May 2015.
