OUTJO, 07 APR (NAMPA) The Omusati Region became first-time winners of the 15th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup here on Monday.
Omusati beat Oshikoto 3-4 on penalties.
Oshikoto Region opened scoring in the first half of the game with a goal by Desmond Kharigub but Omusati's defender, Christopher Johannes, levelled the score in the second half of the game.
Oshikoto got their goalscorer Kharigub sent off when he collected his second yellow card for kicking out after a tackle by Joel Vaeta.
With 90 minutes into the match, the game was one all.
In extra time, Oshikoto suffered another blow that reduced the team to nine men with the sending off of their midfielder Rhonney Hangala for a dangerous tackle.
Despite the two red cards, Oshikoto was the dominant team, controlling the ball with high possession through the strategy of fast runs and direct attack.
In the last minute of extra time, Innocent Khaiseb of Oshikoto missed a golden opportunity because he only had the goalkeeper to beat but he shot wide and denied his team their first-ever win of the Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The match then went into a penalty shootout and Oshikoto took the lead after an early miss by Christopher Johannes of Omusati.
Omusati made a dramatic comeback to win the shootout 4-3 after Kapweya Johannes saved Paulus Elago's shot and Leonald Fillemon hit the upright.
In the game played earlier on Monday, Kavango East beat Oshana 3-2 to win the third place play-off.
Omusati received N.dollars 30 000 and the winning trophy while Oshikoto received N.dollars 15 000.
Player of the Tournament was Daniel Kamanya of Omusati and Referee of the Tournament was Nehemia Shovaleka. Top Scorer of the Tournament was Desmond Kharigub of Oshikoto, and Player of the Final was Ronaldo Gaoab of Oshikoto. The Fair Play award went to Kavango East and Keeper of the Tournament was Johannes Kapweya of Omusati.
