WALVIS BAY, 31 MAR (NAMPA) – An unidentified criminal attempted to burn one of the public prosecutors’ office at the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The incident happened between 20h00 and 21h00 when a suspect forced one of the windows open and threw in a burning object.
Anonymous sources told Nampa at the court on Tuesday that no police dockets were destroyed in the fire.
“The fire brigade responded on time and put out the fire before it could destroy the whole office. Few documents are burnt but those can be replaced. It would have been worse if serious records were affected,” said the source.
Apart from a few documents, a prosecutor ‘s table is also damaged by the inferno.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Crime Investigation’s Coordinator for the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner, Ottilie Kashuupulwa said she was at the scene on Monday night.
“We do not know who the suspect or how many are involved. As for the records, we still have to establish whether any of them were burnt,” said the commissioner.
She further noted that the motive for setting the office on fire is still to be established but it is suspected that they wanted to destroy dockets dealing with criminal cases.
She said a complete report on the matter is expected by Wednesday.
