SWAKOPMUND, 30 MAR (NAMPA) – Some political parties in the Erongo Region are ready for the Swakopmund Constituency by-election to fill the vacancy left with the passing away of councillor Germina Shitaleni.
The by-election is provisionally scheduled for 29 May this year.
Shitaleni passed away earlier this month. She represented the ruling Swapo-Party as constituency councillor and Member of Parliament in the National Council.
Swapo’s regional coordinator for Erongo, Phillipus Heita indicated that his party is in the process of nominating three candidates, of which one will represent the party in the by-election.
“We will send the candidates’ names to the politburo for vetting and after that the district conference will elect one candidate. That name will be submitted to the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), and thereafter we start with the (election) campaign,” Heita told Nampa in Monday.
United Democratic Front (UDF) president Apius Auchab said: “Any election in this country will be contested by my party, so we are obviously going to take part in the Swakopmund election”.
The acting regional coordinator for the National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) in this region, Uahimisa Kaapehi said his party is preparing for a contest.
“An executive committee meeting where we will nominate candidates is scheduled for 11 April in Windhoek. So, we will definitely take part in the election,” he said.
The ECN already announced that the supplementary registration of voters will take place from 01 April until 03 April at seven fixed and five semi-fixed stations.
The ECN’s elections’ coordinator for Erongo, Kashidinge Lukas Nghipuilepo said the election date is not yet gazetted and is thus still a proposed date.
“The president (Hage Geingob) will pronounce himself on the proposed date before it is made official,” he said.
The submission of political party candidates already commenced on 30 March, while independent candidates should submit their names from 14 April.
“I did not receive any candidates as yet, but the submission period runs until 16 April,” the ECN official said.
