OTJIWARONGO, 16 MAR (NAMPA) The fate of the suspended Swapo party elders council treasurer for the Otjiwarongo district on allegations of using his position to serve his personal interest and supporting the Affirmative Repositioning movement, is now in the hands of the Politburo for ratification.
The Swapo Otjozondjupa regional coordinator, Susan Hikopua told Nampa in an interview on Sunday that the partys regional executive committee here endorsed the suspension of Benjamin Khairabeb on 07 March 2015. Khairabeb was suspended from all party activities and duties in the region on 24 February this year and is charged with serious misconduct.
When asked on Sunday, Khairabeb confirmed to this agency that he received a letter from the regional executive committee endorsing his suspension but denied the allegations levelled against him. He insisted on asking why the regional executive committee did not call him for a disciplinary hearing so that his side is also heard.
I am a full Swapo member, why didnt they call me in a hearing if they have a case against me? There is nothing here but personal character assassination, he charged. Khairabeb joined Swapo in 1978 in Otjiwarongo.
Hikopua claimed to have received reports that Khairabeb on many occasions held un-authorised meetings around Otjiwarongo to instigate some party members to consider him for a position of councillor at the Otjiwarongo town council during the November 2014 Regional and Local Authority Elections.
It is also alleged that Khairabeb drafted a list of names that he wants to become the next regional constituency and local authority councillors in the region. Hikopua said for allegedly doing so, Khairabeb deserves to be suspended and will be dealt with accordingly.
On 25 February this year, Khairabeb said that some regional party leaders started to dislike him in 2014 after he questioned them about the partys financial reports as his duty of district treasurer demands. He said his suspension is a strategy aimed at silencing him and scaring other party members.
Hikopua last month received a list of complaints in which Khairabeb is accused of pushing a petition against the regional leadership and misleading Swapo members in the region at a meeting last year November, by making them believe that the regional leadership is weak, ineffective and useless as an attempt to have them lose trust and confidence in the current political leadership of the region.
Hikopua thinks Khairabeb is dishonest and undisciplined because he was allegedly seen around town teaming up with opposition political party members who are badmouthing the Swapo party leadership.
Therefore, it is now up to the Swapo party Political Bureau to expel him, refer his case further to the Central Committee for a decision or to recall him, otherwise our mandate to suspend him is done, Hikopua said.
