WINDHOEK, 14 MAR (NAMPA) – Namibia’s Welwitschias lost 7-61 to South Africa's Steval Pumas in the Vodacom Cup here on Friday evening at the Hage Geingob Stadium.
Speaking to members of the media after the game, Welwitschias’ captain Quinton Esterhuizen said they have learnt a lot from the two encounters the team has been exposed to thus far.
“We will take this defeat into account, and this team, full of young players, is learning by the day and I hope we can do well in our next game,” he said.
The Puma’s started scoring as early as the second minute of the game, putting Namibia under pressure throughout the entire first half.
Before the half-time break, the Pumas scored five tries and four of their conversions, while Namibia’s fly-half Martin Olivier missed a penalty in the 18th minute.
The half-time score was 0-33.
In the second half, the Pumas resumed their domination of the field, scoring three more tries, one penalty try and all conversions.
The Welwitschias only managed to score one try through left-centre Jacques Nell and Shawn Kaizemi who successfully made the conversion.
Pumas’ captain Eduan van der Walt said they were glad to win their second game of the competition but he was concerned the team made many mistakes and it is something they will have to work on for their next game.
Welwitschias’ scrum half Eneill Buitendag was named man of the match.
The Namibians will engage the Griffons, also from South Africa, in round three of the competition on 27 March 2015 at the same stadium.
Namibia regards the Vodacom Cup as preparation for its participation in the International Rugby Board’s Rugby World Cup in England during September this year.
