PUTRAJAYA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Rural and Regional Development Ministry is striving to provide jobs and business opportunities to unemployed youths in rural areas.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Shafie said there were one million unemployed youths nationwide and most of them were school dropouts as their academic qualifications were too low for the job market.

"Besides lagging behind in studies, poverty also hinders them from finding a stable job and as such, they choose to help their families in agriculture, particularly at the farm," he told reporters after attending the Rural Transformation Steering Committee meeting at the Putrajaya Convention Centre (PICC) here today.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Youth and Sports Ministry, and the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, state secretaries and representatives of several government agencies.

Shafie said the meeting was aimed at obtaining feedbacks, suggestions and ideas from other ministries and government agencies on ways to empower rural youth human capital, especially the unemployed.
