Rundu residents demand eviction of elderly woman

SATOTWA, 19 FEB (NAMPA)- Residents at Satotwa informal settlement on the western outskirt of Rundu are demanding the eviction of an elderly woman, accusing her of practicing unbecoming behaviours in the area.
The residents are discontent that the elderly woman plays a double standard for practicing as a witchdoctor and a spiritual healer, allegedly using traditional herbs in the streets that are shared amongst the community. This has worried the residents as it apparently could pose a health hazard such as contracting some unknown sickness or disease.
When contacted for comment, the senior citizen accused of various disturbances said she will not leave the area as she has nowhere else to go.
A seven-member committee that was selected by the Satotwa residents convened for a meeting on Tuesday where they drafted a letter addressed to the Mbunza Traditional Authority leader Chief Alfons Kaundu. In this letter that is expected to be submitted on Thursday, the residents said that since the elderly woman relocated to the Satotwa informal settlement last year, residents in neighbouring houses have been having sleepless nights as she apparently prays for her sick patients all throughout the night, which they say is tantamount to noise pollution.
They said her noisy prayers are causing sleepless nights to the school-going children and those that have to go to work in the morning. The residents want peaceful sleep in the nights.
The concerned Satotwa residents said the woman established an unknown church in her household where she offers prayers to those desperate for divine intervention and where she charges them unknown fees for prayers. The residents stated that her household church was established without the consent of the inhabitants.
What raised eye brows among residents is that the woman allegedly has often been misleading some desperate residents into believing that her prayers are so powerful to the extent that she also prays for chickens that don’t hatch, to hatch normal healthy eggs.
She also boasts of allegedly having the power to see weird things at night that others can’t.
According to the petition, “The Community have decided that she unconditionally vacate from the area and go back to wherever she came from.” They are expecting the 60 year-old woman to vacate at the weekend so they can live in peace.
She however denied all the accusations levelled against her, saying she only prays for the sick and denied using traditional herbs to cure people in streets.
The letter is expected to be handed over to the leader of the Mbunza Traditional Authority Chief Alfons Kaundu on Thursday for his further decision.
