APPEALS COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE ON THREE FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

PUTRAJAYA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Court of Appeal here today upheld the convictions and death sentence on three drug couriers for trafficking over 500gms of heroin which were concealed in rubber capsules and swallowed by the trio.

A three-member panel led by Justice Datuk Azahar Mohamed unanimously dismissed the appeals brought by Kwok Weng Fatt, 64, Abdul Rahman Lee Abdullah, 56, and Nurul Jannah Seng Abdullah, 49, and affirmed the conviction and death sentence imposed on them by the High Court.

"Based on the facts and prevailing circumstances of the case, we are of the view that the trial judge had made a correct finding that the three had knowledge of the drugs," said Azahar.

He said the gist of their story in their cautioned statements and also in their evidence in court were considered by the trial judge. "No appealable error was made by the trial judge in this case," said Azahar who presided on the panel with justices Datuk Rohana Yusuf and Datuk Hamid Sultan Abu Backer. -- MORE
