POLICE DETAIN SUSPECT IN ARSON, EXPLOSION CASE WITHIN 24 HOURS

GEORGE TOWN, July 16 (Bernama) -- A suspect was detained over two cases involving explosion and arson in Bayan Lepas, near here, yesterday.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said a team from the Barat Daya District Police Headquarters arrested a 31-year-old man after raiding a house at Jalan Sungai Ara after a tip off.

"Police seized eight firework shells of various sizes and a motorcycle. With the arrest and seizure, police have solved two cases yesterday in less than 24 hours," he said after opening the Bayan Baru Centralised Lockup at the Bayan Baru Police Station, near here, today. In the first incident, police received a report on a fire at the Community Policing Centre in Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Bayan Lepas at 4.30am yesterday and found traces of arson after finding a plastic barrel containing kerosene.

Meanwhile, police received a report on an explosion at a bungalow in Jalan Changkat Sungai Ara 1, Bayan Lepas which damaged two vehicles at 8.30am.

Abdul Rahim said urine test revealed the suspect was positive for methaphetamine while investigations showed that the suspect had three past criminal records.

He said police would also monitor the sale of firecrackers at night markets and Ramadan bazaars.

On the centralised lockup, Abdul Rahim said it was build at a cost of RM30 million and could accommodate 459 suspects under remand.

He said the centralised lockup, the first in the state, was equipped with 63 cells, 186 CCTV, office, interrogation rooms and several other facilities.
