WINDHOEK, 10 FEB (NAMPA) - The annual Omaruru Spar Cycling Challenge will take place on Sunday.
The town is situated some 242km north-west of Windhoek.
An amount of N.dollars 42 000 is earmarked towards prize monies.
The sponsors this year are Spar Omaruru, First National Bank Omaruru and Cymot.
“Omaruru will continue to support sports in the community, because we need to have healthy and fit athletes in the country,” said Omaruru regional sports officer in the Erongo Region, Berthold Karumendu during a media briefing here on Tuesday.
He told Nampa earlier that the event will be used for talent identification among athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially from areas within Omaruru, Oshakati, Windhoek and other parts of Namibia.
Participants will take part in various distances, ranging from 60 kilometres (km) for non-professional cyclists to 106km for professional riders.
Riders can also participate in a fun ride over 25km.
The different categories are juniors, elite, veterans and masters - open to both men and women.
Martin Freyer and Irene Steyn won the 106km distance in the men's and women's categories last year, but will be absent for the competition this year as they are taking part in the African Cycling Championships in South Africa.
Riders can sign up for the competition until Saturday afternoon.
