SWAKOPMUND, 02 FEB (NAMPA) – Six people burned beyond recognition after the two vehicles they were traveling in collided head-on near Usakos on Sunday.
The horrific accident happened in the afternoon, some five kilometres from Usakos on the way to Arandis in the Erongo Region.
“We do not even know who the deceased persons are at this moment. The corpses were brought to the police mortuary in Walvis Bay,” said Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Walvis Bay on Monday.
A woman survived with serious head injuries and was taken to a hospital. It is not yet clear which hospital.
The two vehicles involved were a Volkswagen Polo sedan, which was travelling from Arandis, and a Suzuki Vitara which was travelling from Usakos. The two cars burst into flames on impact.
Iikuyu said there were two children, a man and a woman in the Polo - all died in the accident – while the other vehicle carried a male driver and the female passenger who survived.
“We will only be able to release a complete report when the next of kin are known and informed. As for now we are busy investigating the matter,” the officer said.
