WINDHOEK, 02 FEB (NAMPA) – Former Namibian amateur heavyweight boxer Paulus Ekongo passed away on Friday in a motor-vehicle accident.
He was 40.
Ekongo boxed between 1997 and 2004, and represented Namibia at various youth games.
He fought in the amateur ranks with the likes of Jason 'Taks' Naule, Frans ‘Rambo’ Hantindi, Paulus ‘Ali’ Nuumbembe and Joe Kaperu.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, his brother John Ekongo said Paulus died on the Oshigambo-Ondombe gravel road after losing control of the vehicle which he was steering.
“He was on holiday in the north. The vehicle rolled several metres, and he was declared dead on the spot,” said John.
Paulus was employed at the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) since 2004 as a sports officer, and coached the army’s volleyball and boxing teams.
The NDF’s head of the sports, Colonel Rinette Hulme told this agency that Paulus was a good sportsman and coach.
“We will miss him, because he gave it his all as a boxing and volleyball coach. Our women’s volleyball team won the league and he was the brain behind their impressive performance,” she said.
Paulus will be laid to rest at his home village of Oshigambo in the Oshikoto Region on a date still to be announced.
