WINDHOEK, 28 JAN (NAMPA) – Bicycle sprockets and chains are already in motion in preparation for the 2015 Omaruru Spar Cycle Classic set for 15 February.
Berthold Karumendu, the regional sports officer for the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture at Omaruru, told Nampa on enquiry Tuesday that sponsors already indicated their commitment towards this event in an estimated N.dollars 45 000 earmarked towards prize monies.
The sponsors this year are Spar Omaruru, First National Bank Omaruru and Cymot.
He said the Omaruru Spar Cycle Challenge will be used for talent identification among athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially from areas within Omaruru, Oshakati, Windhoek and other parts of Namibia.
Participants can take part in various distances, ranging from 60 kilometres (km) for non-professional cyclists to 106km for professional riders.
Riders can also participate in a fun ride over 25km.
The different categories are juniors, elite, veterans and masters - open to both men and women.
Martin Freyer and Irene Steyn won the 106km distance in the men’s and women’s categories last year.
