WINDHOEK, 16 JAN (NAMPA) The Ministry of Education says it will tighten the screws on institutions of higher learning offering diplomas and certificates that are not recognised by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA).
Education Minister, David Namwandi said Namibia cannot afford to have institutions that are trying to dilute the country's education by offering qualifications that are not recognised by the NQA.
He made these remarks here on Wednesday when he officially released the 2014 Grade 12 Namibia Senior Certificate (NSSC) Ordinary-Level results.
The minister warned that the government will make sure that the law will deal with all colleges that are seen to be taking the country's education for granted.
Money is hard to come by and people pay a lot of money to these colleges. We cannot afford to have this issue continue like this in our country, he said.
Namwandi said he has come across several cases of students who were disappointed by the value of the qualifications that they obtained from institutions that are not accredited with the NQA.
These are very sad stories, and we do not want to hear of them anymore. I call on all Namibians who wish to further their studies to visit the NQA for a list of all the accredited institutions, the minister reiterated.
Meanwhile, the NQA earlier this month advised students in Namibia to be careful when enrolling with colleges of higher learning, as some may be bogus institutions.
People should not be misled by certain institutions that spend thousands of dollars advertising on radio and placing full-page adverts in the newspapers, while they offer unregistered qualifications that are not even worth the paper they are printed on, said the NQA.
On a quarterly basis, the NQA releases a list of accredited institutions to empower members of the public when they are choosing an institution for furthering their studies.
The NQA also invited all institutions of learning to proactively apply for accreditation and to register all their programmes on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
