STRONG EARTHQUAKE ROCKS SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS REGION

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- A strong earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit the South Sandwich Islands Region in the Atlantic Ocean at 10.03pm tonight, said the Malaysian Meteorology Department.

The department in a statement today said the epicentre of the earthquake was located 3,842km Southeast of Puerto Montt, Chile and 12,120km Southwest of Pontian, Johor.

"There was no Tsunami threat but the Malaysian Meteorology Department will monitor the situation," said the statement.
