WINDHOEK, 11 JAN (NAMPA) – A 19- year-old man was arrested for killing his 13 year-old cousin and injuring two others with a shotgun on Saturday at the Tosa village in the Kavango East Region.
The incident happened at about 03h00.
Tosa is situated about 45 kilometres east of Rundu in the Mashare Constituency.
Police spokesperson, Inspector Slogan Matheus said during the Sunday media briefing that it is alleged that the shotgun went off accidentally.
“Apparently, the suspect was sleeping with his four cousins at an open space near their traditional hut when he saw a hare. He tried to shoot it with a shotgun but the hare fled into the darkness, and while he was busy placing back the gun a shot went off injuring two of the boys and killing another one in the process,” Matheus said.
The deceased was identified as Bartholomeus Shimuma Kudumo.
The injured victims are Likuwa Jacob Likuwa, 10, who was injured on the right thigh, and 16-year-old Kudumo Basilius Shidimba, who was injured on his left shoulder.
The injured were admitted to the Rundu State Hospital, and their condition is reportedly stable.
The suspect was arrested and charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He is due to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In an unrelated incident, a 24-year-old man hanged himself with a piece of cloth at about 19h50 on Saturday in the Oshakati Police Station holding cells.
The deceased’s identity is known but cannot be released as his next of kin are not informed yet.
The deceased was facing three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder committed in the Zambezi Region. He was kept at the Oshakati Police holding cells to attend High Court proceedings in that town.
No suicide note was left behind, and police investigations into the matter continue.
In a separate incident, a 17-year-old girl was raped by a 23-year-old man on Thursday at the Onandjaba settlement in the Omusati Region.
The incident happened at around 17h30.
It is alleged that the suspect found the victim walking from Onandjaba to her home village, grabbed her while threatening her with a knife and raped her.
The suspect, who is from the same village, was arrested by NamPol the same day, and he is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In another incident, a 29-year-old man died on the spot after he was shot by a security guard in Ondangwa on Sunday.
The incident happened at about 02h20 near the Onguta Complex.
It is alleged that the security guard came to the rescue of a woman who was being robbed by three men.
“When the three men failed in their attempt to rob the woman, they turned to the security guard who was unarmed at the time, and started to throw stones at him as they chased him. He then managed to run up to the Ondangwa Shell Service Station, where he found another security guard on duty from whom he took a shotgun,” Matheus said.
The security guard fired two warning shots at the suspects but they continued to pursue him.
He then shot one of them in the stomach, and he died on the spot, Matheus added.
The deceased was identified as Sackaria Pendapala Abraham, 29, a resident of Ondangwa. The other two suspects ran away after their friend was shot.
His next of kin have been informed and police investigations into the mater continue.
