During the 4.15pm incident, a lecturer and three students were carrying out an experiment in one of the laboratories when fire started in another lab situated in the centre of the building.

However, the lecturer and students managed to escape in time before the fire started spreading.

"Firemen managed to bring the fire under control in an hour and doused completely at 7.20pm," he said when contacted, here, today.

Mohd Khairi said the fire spread quickly due to the presence of flammable chemicals in the laboratory and the fact that the building was old.

He said the department was investigating the cause of the fire and estimated losses while UiTM when contacted said a statement would be issued tomorrow.
