WINDHOEK, 02 JAN (NAMPA) The Police on Tuesday arrested three robbery suspects in the capital after a high speed chase which ended with the firing of several gunshots.
NamPol's public relations officer, Pendukeni Haikali told Nampa on Wednesday that the police became suspicious of a slow moving vehicle which fit the description of a car that was suspected to have been involved in several robberies around the city.
The police asked the driver of the vehicle to pull over, but he refused to adhere to the instruction and sped off,' she said.
Instead of immediately halting their vehicle, a black golf sedan, the suspects speared out of Robert Mugabe Avenue and sped off towards Ausspanplatz with the police in hot pursuit.
The dangerous car chase, which had all the makings of an action movie, snaked through the citys streets, as the criminals tried to shake off the police. They then headed to the Klein Windhoek residential area.
In Klein Windhoek, one of the police officers fired two warning shots towards the car. The driver of the vehicle lost control of the steering wheel and crashed the golf into a fence. The car overturned, said Haikali.
The shooting happened on Kenneth Kaunda Street near the intersection with Bowler Street.
Police then descended on the car and quickly apprehended the three suspects. When they searched the car, the police said they found N.dollars 64 700 in cash money that is suspected to have been stolen in a robbery.
Haikali said the driver was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, and also for failing to adhere to lawful and reasonable police instructions.
The other two suspects were taken into police custody for further interrogations about the money found in their possession.
