OPUWO, 30 DEC (NAMPA) - The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kunene Region is investigating a case of rhino poaching after a cow and calf were found dead in the top Barab Plamwag Concession towards Mbakondja camel camp.
The carcases were discovered and reported to the police on 21 December this year.
According to a police report issued on Monday, unknown suspects killed the two rhinos - a cow and its calf - and dehorned the rhino cow's two horns with a sharp object. The calf was not dehorned.
It is estimated that the value of the two rhinos is N.dollars 1.2 million. Police suspect that they might have been poached between 17 and 19 December this year.
This is the second rhino cow and calf to be poached in the same area this year.
The Governor of the Kunene Region Josua Hoebeb declared war against rhino poaching in the region earlier this year, and a big team of officials from various law enforcement agencies and wildlife protection companies were deployed in the area to join forces in the protection of rhinos and other wildlife.
No suspects have been arrested in all these poaching cases, and police investigations are said to be continuing.
