JAKARTA, July 15 (Bernama) -- Eighteen people were killed and 18 others were injured following a riot among supporters during the final match of the Bupati Cup (District Officer's Trophy) boxing championship at a sports complex in Nabire, Papua, Sunday.

Nabire police spokesman said 11 women and seven men died in the incident.

The incident occurred during the final match between Alvius Rumkorem, from Sasana Persada, and Yulianus Pigome, from Sasana Mawa, which ended with the former being announced the winner.

However, Pigome's supporters protested the result and this led to supporters of the two boxers to tease and then hurl objects, including chairs, at one another.

The situation resulted in a stampede when spectators began to rush out of the stadium at the sports complex.

The stadium, which has only one exit, can accommodate between 800 and 900 spectators, but last night there were more than 1,500 people present to watch the final match
