NABTA takes measures against overcharging

WINDHOEK, 20 DEC (NAMPA) – The Namibia Bus and taxi Association (NABTA) in conjunction with the Ministry of Works and Transport launched the Long-Distance Passenger Transport Tariff Guide here on Saturday.
The 14-page booklet serves to combat the overcharging of long-distance passengers, especially during the festive season. It includes rates for cross-border routes from Windhoek to Cape Town, Upington, Springbok, Johannesburg (all in South Africa), Gaborone in Botswana, Lusaka in Zambia, and Harare in Zimbabwe.
The guide consists of tariffs as per the Transport Act, Act 74 of 1977 Section 12 (a) and Section 12 (12) for long-distance passenger transport as authorised and approved by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
All long-distance taxis are required to obtain the guide between Saturday and 29 December this year when the new tariffs will take effect.
The guides are available at loading points countrywide for N.dollars 50 each, and transport operator drivers and/or passenger transport companies are required to provide copies of their vehicles’, transport permits, and identification documents (IDs) to buy the guide.
Failure to use the guide will result in a fine of N.dollars 500.
Namibian Police Force and other Government officials stationed at roadblocks will be presented with the tariff guide, and will be checking the control sheets which drivers have to produce when requested to do so.
“Commuters must be registered into Public Passenger Contrail Sheet Book in order to assist the police at the roadblocks to know how many passengers are in the vehicle,” said NABTA president Vespa Muunda during the launch.
He said before passengers get into the vehicles, he/she must first ask the price for their route.
