IRELAND BEAT MALAYSIA 5-4 AFTER PENALTY SHOOTOUT

KAZAN (Russia), July 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, represented by Harimau Muda A lost to Ireland 4-5 after a penalty shootout in the 5th to 8th placing playoff of the World University Games (Universiade) football competition at the Trudovye Rezervy Stadium, here, today.

Both teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout which Ireland won 5-4.

Irish goalkeeper Niall Corbert managed to safe two penalties from Malaysian skipper Mohd Irfan Fazail and Muhammad Ferris Danial Mat Nasir while Harimau Muda A goalkeeper Mohd Farhan Abu Bakar denied Jonathan Addis' spot kick.

Malaysia who dominated the first half deservedly took the lead in the 17th minute through Syarul Azwari Ibrahim but Ireland equalised from the penalty spot through Correy Davidson in the 63rd minute when K. Reuben brought down an Irish player inside the box.

Malaysia will now play Canada or Ukraine for 7th-8th placing on Tuesday.
