TUMPAT, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Anti-smuggling Unit (UPP) has set up a special investigation unit to combat drugs and fire arms smuggling activities, especially along the Kelantan-Thailand border.
"The unit, with more than 30 trained staff, is based in Kota Baharu. It will cooperate with all parties involved in the enforcement at the country's border, including security agencies in the neighbouring country, to overcome the two main problems," said the unit's Commander Rusli Karim.
"They will be working closely with all parties in Ops Wawasan and Ops Merpati at the border and this elite unit will also obtain information from certain parties from the neighbouring country," he told Bernama, here, today.
The UPP would increase patrol during the Ramadan month, especially during breaking of fast, as it is deemed a suitable time for smuggling activities.
More than 150 personnel throughout Kelantan have proven their commitment since from January to June, the unit arrested 426 illegal immigrants and seized various products worth RM4.29 million.
Recently, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Ministry would strengthen the enforcement of entry and exit at the Kelantan-Thailand border following an increase in serious crime, including murders using fire arms, in the state recently.
