SEMPORNA, July 13 (Bernama) -- Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal today reminded party members, who will be having their branch meetings beginning July 15, to give priority to unity than winning position in the party.

He said although all members could offer themselves to contest for any party post, they should ascertain that it would not be at the expanse of the party.

"My advise is to give priority to party unity. The party branches are our strength because they have hundreds or thousands of members.

"At divisional level, we do not have many members," he told reporters after a meeting with village heads and members of the Village Development and Security Committee, Imam and Umno leaders in Semporna here today.

The Umno branches nationwide have been given between July 15 and 30 to hold their meetings.

Mohd Shafie, who is Semporna Umno divisional leader, said members offering themselves to contest for posts should do so with the aim of wanting to strengthen the party.

"If we are confident that the existing branch leaders are capable of continuing the party struggle, why the need to change," he added.

In SHAH ALAM, Selangor Umno Information chief Abdul Shukur Idrus said a total of 2,333 Umno branches in the state would be holding their respective meeting from this Monday until Aug 31.

Selangor Umno had allocated RM250 for each branch to hold the meeting and it would be up to their respective divisions to top up the allocation," he told Bernama today.

He said party branches would be required to inform their respective divisions on the date of their meetings so that representatives would be sent to oversee the meetings.

This year , there will be election at the branch level, he added.

In ALOR SETAR, Kedah Umno liaison secretary Datuk Othman Aziz said the state Umno election committee would monitor the meetings of all the 2,169 party branches in Perlis.

"My advice to all branches is to hold their meetings soon and not wait until the last minute," he told Bernama today.

Othman, who is Jerlun Member of Parliament, said among the new requirements introduced for this year's party election was that only those who had been a party member for at least three years were eligible to contest.

In PUTRAJAYA, Putrajaya Umno deputy chief Datuk Khairudin Samad suggested the 44 party branches in the division to hold their respective meetings after the Aidilfitri celebration.

"During the fasting month, if the meeting is held during the day, members are working. If it is held during the weekend, many want to return to their hometown or village to breakfast with their parents.

"If the meeting is held at night, there is the breaking of fast feast and the tarawih prayer. So, it is better to have it after Hari Raya," he said when contacted by Bernama.
