Swapo holds onto two-thirds majority

WINDHOEK, 30 NOV (NAMPA) - Namibia's ruling Swapo-Party held onto its two-thirds majority with a landslide victory of 715 026 votes during the National Assembly election held on Friday.
The ruling party garnered 77 seats in Namibia’s next National Assembly to be inaugurated on 21 March 2015, leaving only 19 seats to be shared among the opposition political parties.
In August this year, the Swapo-Party made history after a successful election of its National Assembly candidates on the basis of 50/50 gender representation.
The 50/50 gender representation policy has given women an opportunity to participate on an equal footing with their male counterparts in the country’s legislative process
The Presidential and National Assembly elections' results were announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia on Monday evening after a three-day counting and verification process.
The DTA of Namibia ended a distant second with 42 933 votes.
The DTA is now the official opposition party after defeating the current official opposition party, the Rally for Democracy and Progress which obtained 31 372.
