SEMPORNA, July 13 (Bernama) -- About 1,500 Mara-sponsored students in Egypt are safe and parents should not be unduly worried, said Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said Wisma Putra was monitoring the situation in Egpyt and so far there was no plan to bring them home.

"They have enough food supply and we are getting good cooperation from Wisma Putera.

"If the situation worsens, we have made arrangements to fly them home," he told reporters after meeting members of village development and security committees and leaders of various Semporna Umno branch wings here today.

On the Kuala Besut by-election, Shafie, who is also Umno vice-president, said the voters were matured and would pick the right candidate to represent them.

"But what is important for the BN is to organise its campaign programmes to thwart the opposition's onslaughts.

"I am confident that the BN candidate, who is young, educated and dynamic, will be able to make a significant contribution if he is given the opportunity to serve the constituency," said Shafie.

The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent assemblyman Dr A Rahman of a lung cancer on June 26.
