OMAUEZONJANDA, 24 NOV (NAMPA) - Two Namibian Police Force (NamPol) officers lost their lives in a car accident on the Epukiro road on Saturday afternoon.
They were among the police crew that was designated to serve during the weekend's OvaMbanderu coronation ceremony.
A third police officer escaped the accident unhurt with minor scratches. He was discharged from hospital the following day.
The accident took place at the Skoonheid Resetlement Farm turn-off, some 10km from Du Plessies Plaas on the Epukiro road.
It is not clear what caused the accident, but the police suspect that the driver may have lost control over the vehicle after missing a turn. The vehicle rolled about four times before coming to a standstill on its roof on the shoulder of the road.
Although the identities of those involved in the accident are known to Nampa, they could not be independently verified.
NamPol Regional Commander for the Omaheke Region, Josephat Abel said it is not easy losing two members of the force in an accident, especially in the line of duty.
“We will miss them in our work as colleagues and friends. This is a sad time for us in NamPol Omaheke and we pray for the best. May their souls rest in peace,” he said.
In an unrelated incident, a male suspect was arrested in the Epako location of Gobabis, after he fatally stabbed another man to death with a knife.
Police suspect that an argument might have erupted at the gambling house where the two were hanging out for the evening, leading to the murder.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Gobabis Magistrate's Court on Monday.
