MUTJIKU, 15 JUL (NAMPA) - An adult woman was trampled to death as people rushed to get onto a truck after attending a meeting at a village in the Kavango Region on Saturday.
The incident occurred at the Mutjiku village, situated some 250 kilometres east of Rundu.
The deceased was identified as Liza Mapeghu, age unknown, a resident of the Chetto village. Her next-of-kin have already been informed.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) said the deceased person and several other villagers were rushing to get onto a truck so that they could be taken back to their villages after they had attended an annual general meeting (AGM) of the Karamachian Association at the Mutjiku village.
The deceased allegedly fell to the ground as she tried to climb onto the truck, and the other people apparently just trampled over her.
It was getting dark at the time, and visibility was poor.
NamPol?s Crime Investigations? Co-ordinator for the Kavango Region, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton told Nampa on Sunday that it was only after people had gotten onto the truck that they noticed the woman lying dead on the ground.
No arrest has been made by the police in this matter.
