ONDANGWA, 15 JUL (NAMPA) - The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshana Region raised N.dollars 110 000 at a gala dinner held here on Saturday.
The gala dinner was held in preparation of the upcoming Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisations (SARPCCO) Games.
Business personalities from the Oshana Region pledged to offer this massive financial support to NamPol to enable the police to host their counterparts from other Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries for the regional police sports games to take place in Namibia later this year.
Businessman Paavo Amwele of Huhu City Company pledged the highest amount of N.dollars 15 000, followed by David Sheehama David of Kambwa Trading and Tobias Onesmus Amadhila of Tona Enterprise with N.dollars 10 000 each.
The Police have to raise funds in the various regions to contribute to the national budget of the tournament to ensure that they would be able to cater for the accommodation and transportation of their guests, and to meet all other needs and requirements during the tournament.
NamPol?s Deputy Commander in the Oshana Region, Deputy Commissioner Rauha Amwele told guests at the gala dinner that his office launched the fundraising drive some three weeks ago.
?Apart from this gala dinner, other fundraising events have taken place at various community centres within the region already with the same purpose of generating money for the SARPCCO Games,? he said.
Business personalities who also spoke at the gala dinner, said the local business community had decided to support NamPol?s fundraising event to show their appreciation for the work that police officers do in combating crime in the region.
They said NamPol officers, under able leadership of Oshana Regional Police Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, have done a good job to fight crime and business people in the Oshana Region are now doing their business without any fear of criminals.
The SARPCCO Games will take place from 19-30 August in Windhoek this year. This will be the 8th edition of this annual tournament.
Speaking at the same event, Kashihakumwa said the objective of the SARPCCO Games is to foster partnership and advance the common purpose of fighting cross-border crime amongst the junior ranks of the Police forces in the SADC region.
Kashihakumwa also pointed out that NamPol Inspector-General, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga will become the SARPCCO chairman for the next two years, as from this year?s SARPCCO Games.
Sports codes featuring in the SARPCCO Games are athletics, football, netball, volleyball, darts, chess and tennis.
South Africa hosted SARPCCO Games in 1999, 2001 and in 2005. Botswana hosted the Games in 2003, Zimbabwe in 2007, Malawi in 2009 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2011.
