WALVIS BAY, 05 NOV (NAMPA) – A 24-year-old woman from Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region is to be charged with concealment of birth or alternatively murder, after she allegedly killed her new-born baby girl by filling her mouth with toilet paper.
The incident allegedly happened at a shack in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmund residential area on Monday at around 15h30.
It is suspected that the baby died after her mother, who had been pregnant for the past nine months, gave birth to her on her own and then stuffed pieces of toilet paper into her mouth, probably to keep her from crying and alerting the neighbours.
The Namibian Police Force’s (NamPol) Crime Investigations Co-ordinator in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa confirmed to Nampa on Wednesday that the woman is accused of killing her baby.
“She is currently under police watch in the Walvis Bay State Hospital, because of some complications experienced during birth. When she gets better, she will be charged and taken to court,” said Kashuupulwa.
She said a member of the public informed the police about the incident.
The woman allegedly gave birth on her own as nobody was aware of her pregnancy because she had kept it a secret.
It is suspected that her intention was to kill the baby and then dump her.
