KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- The common understanding between Thailand's National Security Council and Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the core group which represent the Southern Thailand community, to achieve the Ramadan Peace Inititive 2013 is a stepping stone towards achieving peace in the province.
Malaysian Government facilitator for the Joint Working Group Peace Dialogue Process (JWG-PDP) on Southern Thailand, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zamzamin Hashim, said he was optimistic and confident the Initiative would be extended beyond the period agreed upon.
"The Ramadan Peace Initiative is proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Both sides want peace in the province and they have shown their commitment," he told a press conference here today.
He said the Ramadan Peace Initiative 2013 was achieved, following the fourth JWG-PDP held in Kuala Lumpur last month.
Ahmad Zamzamin said the joint effort was set for a 40-day period, beginning July 10, (from first Ramadan until 10th Syawal). The areas involved in the initiative are the four Southern Thailand provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala and Songkhla (including the areas of Nathawi, Sadao, Chenak, Tiba and Sebaya).
