LABUAN, July 12 (Bernama) -- Consumers in Labuan have expressed concern over recurring problems related to insufficient essential items, each time Hari Raya draws close.
Their worry is understandable. The international offshore financial centre relies on imported essential items, mainly from mainland Sabah.
The Labuan Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Office however, said it would ensure the problem would not recur as efforts are underway to ensure the essential items were available and stocked up in the market.
Its deputy director, Aslani Dabi, said discussions with traders, retailers and importers had been carried out to check on stocks and unexpected volume from consumers, in view of the coming celebration.
“Checks on price-controlled consumer items are ongoing to ensure traders are ethical in their business activities. We do not want to see the mushrooming of unscrupulous traders during the festive season,†he said.
He said flour, cooking oil, sugar, rice and chicken were among commodities whose availability would be ensured.
