Positive start for Unam FC in NPL

WINDHOEK, 13 OCT (NAMPA) – Namibia Premier League (NPL) newcomers University of Namibia Football Club (Unam FC) started their league campaign with a bang.
The club, which plied its trade in the Southern Stream First Division up to last season, bought Ramblers Football Club’s Premier League status to participate in the 2014/15 Premier League season, which kicked off countrywide on 11 October.
Unam beat Benfica of Tsumeb and Touch and Go of Otavi in its first two back-to-back matches of the 2014/15 Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) NPL campaign, thus registering six points.
The ‘students’ beat Benfica 2-1 at the Oscar Norich Stadium in Tsumeb on Saturday, and Touch and Go by 1-0 in Otavi on Sunday.
Unam coach Marcelo Wakudumo told Nampa on Monday that recording victories in opening games of the season is a good start and motivation for the entire Unam community.
“We can only be proud of ourselves after such an intense start to the season. We played away from home, and our opponents had all the home support to cheer them on throughout the games.
I should give credit to the players for being disciplined and sticking to our game-plans to get the much-needed results, because the players realised that the sky is the limit for them if they want to achieve their goals this season,” he beamed.
Wakudumo believes that it will be an intense season playing double-headers, but they are ready for it.
“Playing two games a weekend is not easy as there are a lot of factors involved.
There is fatigue, injuries and travelling from game to game to deal with, but we have to get used to it as these are the structure which are in place.
The best thing we should focus on is how to recover quickly from the Saturday game before the Sunday one,” he stated.
