Nigeria sinks Ivory Coast to go top of Group A

WINDHOEK, 12 OCT (NAMPA) – Six-time African women’s football champions Nigeria showed their intention of winning the trophy again after beating Ivory Coast 4-2 here on Saturday.
The game marked the second match of the 2014 TN Mobile Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women Championship underway in Windhoek.
In the second Group A game, Nigeria and Ivory Coast were tightly matched in the first half of the game.
Nigeria opened the scoreboard just 12 minutes into the game through Ukpong Esther Sunday, but Ivory Coast equalised eight minutes later after striker Amoin Elloh was brought down in the box by Nigerian defender Onome Ebi.
Nwabuoku Chiedu converted for her side from the penalty spot.
The half-time score was one-all.
Just 10 minutes into the second half, Ivory Coast defender Mariam Diakite conceded an own goal to give Nigeria the lead.
Ivory Coast, however, equalised in the 75th minute through Christine Lohoues, but Nigeria scored two more goals through Ugochi Oparanozie in the 73rd and 86th minutes.
Nigeria and Namibia are now level on points in Group A after Namibia beat Zambia 2-0 in an earlier encounter.
However, Nigeria has a better goal difference, placing Namibia second in the group.
The next Group A matches will be played on Tuesday at the same venue.
Sunday’s Group B matches will be played at the Independence Stadium between South Africa and Cameroon at 17H00, and Ghana against Algeria at 20H00.
