WINDHOEK, 09 OCT (NAMPA) The University of Namibia (Unam) Rebels won the Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) League in Windhoek on Wednesday.
Rebels defeated Lions 90-80 to be crowned the 2014 champions.
The two teams were the winners of their respective play-off games played earlier.
The KBA league started in April this year and ended on Wednesday.
From the start of the game, Rebels and Lions tightly matched each other, and the first quarter ended 31-20 in favour of Rebels.
Rebels kept their lead throughout the second quarter, winning 52-45.
Lions came back energised and more determined after the break, and with the crowd rallying for them scored a number of points to reduce the score to 67-64. But luck was not on their side as the third quarter ended with Lions trailing with four points (72-68).
In the fourth and last quarter both teams displayed great defensive and attacking tactics.
For the first time in the game Lions took the lead with just three minutes left on the clock (78-80), but Rebels took charge and used the last two minutes to regain the lead, scoring six more shots to take the final score to 90-80.
Speaking to Nampa after the game, Rebels coach Manuel Carballo said credit should be given to his players for playing as a unit and following instructions.
All glory should be given to God. Winning this league gives me a feeling I cannot really describe, but I have to thank my players for working as a team the whole season and showing dedication throughout the season, he said.
Carballo added that he was happy to see more Namibian players in the two teams which played in the final, saying he believes that in the near future the Namibian national basketball team will be a force to be reckoned with.
Meanwhile, there will be an All Star game at the Unam basketball court on Saturday between the best Namibian players and the best foreign players in the KBA league.
After that game there will be an awards ceremony to honour the best achievers in the league.
