TRIO ESCAPE DEATH AS LORRY CRASHES INTO RAVINE

MARANG, July 11 (Bernama) -- Three men escaped death after a trailer lorry laden with retail goods crashed into a 30-metre ravine and overturned in Kampung Pengkalan Kuin here today.

Driver Mohd Shahrizan Ismail, 29, was unhurt while attendants Mohd Nazrin Yusoff, 22, and Mohd Reduan Abdul Wahab, 19, were slightly injured in the 11.30 am incident.

Mohd Shahrizan said he was trying to restart the lorry after checking on a faulty battery when the 26-tonne vehicle rolled on for about 100 metres and plunged into the ravine.

Mohd Nazrin and Mohd Reduan were arranging some goods in the back of the lorry when the incident happened, and all three men went down the ravine with the lorry.

Mohd Nazrin said he and Mohd Reduan held on to the lorry as it crashed through the trees.

Mohd Shahrizan's elder sister, Subayah, 35, who saw the lorry roll down the ravine near their house, quickly summoned the villagers to help the three men with the assistance of fire and rescue personnel from the Marang fire and rescue station.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, a technician of the Terengganu Survey and Mapping Department, Kamaruddin Hamzah, 55, was killed in a road accident in Kampung Merbau Patah as he was riding a motorcycle to his house in Pengadang Baru to drive a car taken delivery by one of his children.

His eldest daughter, Siti Amira, 26, said she was shocked to hear of his death as she had spoken to him moments ago.

Terengganu Public Order and Traffic chief Supt Alias Hashim confirmed the accident and said Kamaruddin's body had been sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

In KANGAR, a car knocked down two pupils on a bicycle in Jalan Mata Ayer, killing one of them and seriously injuring the other.

Kindergarten pupil Nur Aleya Batrisha Mashrul Nusairi, six, was killed while her elder sister, Nur Fatin Nabila, 10, was seriously injured in the 7.10 am accident, Arau Police chief Supt Mohd Nadzri Hussin said.

Police have held the driver of the car for investigation, he added.

The girls' father, Mashrul Nusairi Mohd Noor, 39, said that usually he would send Nur Aleya Batrisha to the kindergarten but today she had opted to ride pillion on her sister's bicycle.
